How often should I clean my carpet?

This is a very popular question. The two largest carpet manufacturers in the world (Shaw Carpet Industries and DuPont) and most other carpet fiber manufacturers recommend hot water extraction over steam or any other type of carpet cleaning. Dupont and many other manufacturers actually require the hot water extraction method for carpet cleaning to honor their warranties. These same carpet manufacturers recommend that carpets should be cleaned every 6 months based on average use. If your carpets receive more or less than average use then get them cleaned as needed. What is average use? Hmmm….this is a very subjective question. Some families are large, others have children, some have smokers & pets. All these things play a part in contributing to a higher level of use than the average 3 person household. If you have a cement driveway or dirt driveway that might increase or decrease the amount of use. Different makes of carpet also play a factor. The following chart will give you a general idea:
Traffic Soil Rate Professionally Cleaned
1.Light Soil Every 12-18 months
2.Normal SoilEvery 6-12 months
3.Heavy Soil Every 3-6 months
4.Extreme Conditions Every 2–3 months
You can help extend the time in between cleanings by the following tips. Tip #1 Place mats in front of all doors that enter and exit your home. 90% of all the soil that gets left on your carpet comes from outside. A good mat will cut down the amount of soil that enters your home by 60%. Tip#2 Add carpet protector when you get your carpets cleaned next time. Carpet protector reduces permanent stains. A good protector like scotch guard will allow you to remove spots and spills much more easily and effectively. It is very important that you use a high quality protector. Discount protectors are not as effective and sometimes void the carpet warranty. The following pictures can give you an example of what stains will do or not do depending on good carpet protector. carpet cleaning
